Getting Started with Randomizer!

Welcome to rando! Rando is a ton of fun and it's always awesome to welcome new players aboard. The amount of settings on the menu and the number of resources out there can seem daunting at first, and it can be really hard to know where to start. If you're interested in randomizer and you need some direction, this page should provide some help!

First, I want to mention that while this site provides many guides for racing randomizer, it's totally fine to play it however you want! You can play solo or with friends, co-op or races, or on your own with any combination of the many mods on Scarab/Lumafly that are not typical for the speedrunning community's races.

If it's your first time playing randomizer, I recommend that you start with the mods page to get it all set up! If you need a quick tutorial on how to install randomizer and related mods, that's where you'll want to look.

If you're unsure what settings to use, I recommend that you start with the default settings for your first rando, and experiment with new settings from there. It's totally up to you to determine which settings you find most fun! However, if you're looking to start racing in HKSC (the Speedrunning and Randomizer Community Discord) you will want to try playing a few seeds with our standard settings before joining your first race.

If you want to play a co-op randomizer with your friends, the itemsync guide has instructions for setting up the Itemsync mod for Hollow Knight. Itemsync is a mod that basically just sends items you pick up to other people you're playing with, and vice versa. Itemsync is not the same thing as Multiplayer; you will want the HKMP mod for that. (External guides for HKMP are linked on that page and will also be linked below!)

If you're looking to start racing, you'll want to give the rules page a readthrough, especially if you're thinking of joining races in HKSC. You may also want to read through the formats page if you're organizing a race on your own with friends, or you're just curious about racing formats! Finally, the bingo page explains how the bingo boards used in races work. (You can even use these when you're playing solo if you want!)
